Barrack's Arch conservation, Perth 2025
In 2025, Western Heritage proudly completed the restoration of Barracks Arch, one of Perth’s most iconic heritage landmarks. This project demanded precision and sensitivity to maintain the original character of the 19th-century structure while ensuring its long-term stability and visual integrity.
Brick Repairs and Colour Matching
All damaged bricks were carefully repaired or replaced, ensuring the new material perfectly matched the original tone and texture. Through a detailed chromatic study, our team replicated the authentic colour variations of the existing brickwork, preserving the historical appearance while reinforcing the overall structure.
Repointing
We carried out full repointing of the joints, using a traditional lime-based mortar to maintain breathability and flexibility. This not only reinforced the structural stability but also restored the crisp definition of the masonry that had been lost over time.
Cleaning and Surface Restoration
A gentle high-pressure water cleaning process was used to remove accumulated dirt and biological growth, revealing the natural texture and colour of the brickwork without damaging its historic surface.
Lime Render Repairs on Castellations
The lime render located on the upper castellations had suffered from cracking and detachment over the years. Western Heritage repaired these delicate sections with heritage-approved lime materials, applied by hand to restore both structural cohesion and original detailing.
Preserving a Perth Icon
Barracks Arch remains one of the city’s most photographed and symbolic structures. Through this restoration, Western Heritage reaffirmed its dedication to preserving Western Australia’s architectural heritage, combining craftsmanship, traditional methods, and respect for history to ensure the Arch continues to stand proudly for generations to come.
